I have played at Stoke Park Golf Club before, playing the Colt & Alison courses, so on this visit I played the Alison & Lane Jackson layouts which are holes 10 to 27.
The two courses at Marriott St Pierre Golf Club surround a 14th Century Manor House all set within 400 acres of stunning Monmouthshire countryside. The Old Course has been host to international tournaments, including the Solhiem Cup while the Mathern Course can be tricky with water coming into play on a number of the holes.
The Old Course at St Pierre
The first hole on the Old Course is a decent length par 5 that runs between the driving range and the ninth. Considering you get a free drop if your ball enters the range the pressure on the tee is not too great. I managed a slight fade, just missing the treeline on the left of the fairway ending up smack bang in the middle of it. Unfortunately I pulled my next two shots left so after a satisfying tee shot I ended up with a 7.
You could say that I learnt to play golf at Heath Park, we would go there as teenagers and hone our iron play, you couldn’t really practice driving as there isn’t a hole long enough. Designed by Neil Coles it is very much a practice pitch and putt course but I loved the place, once managing 56 rounds in one year.
Designed by Harry Colt, Haste Hill is probably one of the most beautiful courses in Middlesex.
Haste Hill Golf Club – Hole 1
This is a great opening hole, it is downhill so club selection is tricky. Under club and you may well find yourself in the ditch whereas taking too much club can result in overshooting the green by 10 yards, into the trees.
You pass through the main gate of the estate at Brocket Hall and up the long drive to the exquisite stately home that dates back to 1239 getting a small glimpse of the course that awaits you.
With the recent addition of Laranjal, Quinta do Lago now boasts three championship courses. The lush green fairways of these layouts are threaded amongst holiday villas and wide lakes, accompanied by glistening white sand bunkers to create one of Portugal’s best golfing resorts.
