Course Review

Nice little nine hole course, not very long though. The course is quite open so it can get a little windy. The greens were in very good condition and the ball seems to roll true. There is water in play on a couple of holes but not too much danger. A quote from Ken 'The clubhouse is nice and cozy with a tasty short skirted barmaid.

Hole 3
The first of the par 3's has trouble on the left.

The course starts with quite an easy par 4 the fairway is open and there are no bunkers reachable from the tee. The 2nd hole is a different story the green is reachable but bunkers on the front left & right of the green plus a bunker 50 yards back from the green make the shot a very tricky one. The 3rd hole has no danger on the right so stay clear of the left side.

Hole 6
Play over the trees or aim at the pylon with a slight draw.

The 4th hole has a choice to make from the tee and a tricky approach to the green. The 5th holes water short of the green should really not come into play unless you really miss hit your tee shot. The par 4 6th needs an accurately placed tee shot to leave yourself with a shot to the green and the 7th looks reachable in one but if you choose to lay up make sure you clear the ditch and stay left of the tree.

Woodpecker on hole 9
Green woodpecker collecting his lunch on the 9th fairway.

The 8th hole has quite a long two tiered green so there is a 1 club difference depending on where the pin is placed. The course finishes with a par 5 that you should be putting for a birdie on as, if played safe is not too long and the only danger is the out of bounds down the left although the green is bunkered well.

Favourite Hole

Hole 4: 356 yard par 4 slight dogleg to the left.

Hole 4
The choice from the tee, right or left of that tree.

There is a pond just in front of the tee on this hole but it does not really come into play, unless you get a really bad tee shot. What needs negotiating on this hole is the tree which is smack bang in the middle of the fairway at just the right distance of where your tee shot will end up. After getting past the tree your approach shot has to be accurate because there is water on the right of the green and O.O.B. on the left.

Great little course for a beginner. It is quite open but the fairways are wide enough to compensate.
An interesting hazard on Hole 6 (dogleg left)is an electricity pylon, coming into play if you're too far right from your tee shot. Of course, I was fine ;o) but my buddy clattered the metal frame and we lost his ball. Oh well, at least I won....

A good course for all levels of golfer, with plenty of scoring opportunities for the better players. I like the par 3's, most of them have well-placed bunkers that await you if your tee shot is short, left, or right.
A word of warning, watch out for the balls flying out from the golf range fence on the 17th and 18th holes.

A real confidence booster. Drivable par 4's, a couple of 5's and some tricky little three's.

Plenty of gold on show . The greens a bit iffy , but in all good clean fun.

Rocco and I enjoyed the foursome we had on Saturday. Very wet at times which helped when attacking the back hole.

I’ve played this course many times and it’s a great course to learn on. Quite short but not without its challenges. For a non-members course, its an exceptionally well maintained course with good greens, in fact its far better than many (more expensive) 18 holes courses I’ve played. A welcoming atmosphere with no attitude at all. Definitely worth a visit.

Well maintained with good tees and fairways and medium paced greens. I seem to remember sand on every hole but most are relatively shallow and all are well placed. There are quite a few trees and plantations to avoid and they give the course a well established look. Overhead power lines detract from the experience but really only come into play on the par 3 eighth where the run the length of the hole and can easily be struck, fortunately with the ball and not the club!
If you can drive the ball reasonably well you will be left with no more than a short iron to any par 4 green. I played the par 5 ninth into the wind and it required three well struck shots to get home. The fifth is a picturesque hole but will be negotiated with a short iron and the third, downhill par 3 with a medium iron, has the potential to be a very good hole.
As noted in the above review the 4th is probably the best hole on the course. If you are long enough off the tee the best line in is from the right side of the hole but if you can be long and straight just hammer the drive left of the central tree and you'll be left with a flick to the green anyway.
Pleasant staff and facilities with smallish pro shop. £12 (I think) for 9 holes midweek represents reasonable value. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

I play here most sundays and always win £10.00, therefore I love this course. Ginga 02/02/07

I am a relatively new player and try to play 9 holes most weekends. There are some good courses in the area but Abbey moor is my favourite. It is an attractive course and is well maintained. Also, the atmosphere is very friendly. Well worth a visit.

I have returned to golf after illness and try to play golf at least twice a week and as i live just down the road its very handy for me. the course is very well maintained and always seems to look good, the staff are always friendly and the club house is great , kevin is always welcoming, great little club, would be even better if it had 18 holes.

If those who think abbey is a short course i suggest they become members and play off the back tees as it becomes a very different golf course indeed, as a founder member i have played there many times and agree that playing off the yellow tees it is quite a short couse and a couple of holes are drivable but playing in medals the white tees are in different positions which makes some of the holes challenging and long, definitely worth joining.
