Course Review
Where do we start, this course is an absolute
joy to play, tees, greens, fairway's the whole course is up to championship
standards. The clubhouse has great facilities & very friendly staff, a
special thank you to Tamzin (hope it's spelt right) who looked after us
in the evenings.
The 4th is our favourite hole and is described
below. The par 3 5th is not too difficult if you stay right and the same
goes for the par 4 6th.
At this point we must mention the wildlife that we encountered during the opening
holes, rabbits, robins, bitterns, pheasants, 8-inch crayfish!! and we didn't
see any, but there is a snake path on the course.
The 7th is another par 3 where you have to hit the green or you won't get there,
200 yards over a lake, through a gap in the trees.
The 8th & 9th par 5's give you a chance to get a par but you
will have to hit 2 cracking shots to get on the greens in 2.
One is well guarded by bunkers the other will be a blind approach.
Then comes the walk to the 10th, the picturesque 10th, the hole with the rock
face on the left and the ravine on the right, we played the course 3 times on
our visit and were tempted to aim at the rock face just to see where the ball
would bounce to, but we didn't.
The next 3 par 4's are not too demanding if the wind is favourable. Then comes
the 14th a plus 400 yard par 4, tee shot over a lake, out of bounds on the right.
The 15th is coming back alongside the 14th but be careful off the tee, that lake
is reachable with a good drive. The par 5 16th is another chance to get par or
birdie and as long as you stay on the right of the 17th you should get a good
score there too.
Finally reaching the 18th, elevated tee looking down
200 yards over a lake a nightmare if you are struggling with your round. They
didn't change the pin position on all three days we were there, front left just
in front of a bunker. If you aimed for the middle of the green then you had a
good chance to 2 putt for a par, but I put my three shots I had there straight
at the pin each time ending up in the bunker or pitching on the green and bouncing
into the bunker.
Favourite Hole
Hole 4: You really do
need to find the fairway off the tee on this hole, trees and a river
run the whole length on the left and a huge slope/rock face runs the length
on the right. Get a good drive from the tee and you still will not
be going for the green in 2 because you can't see the green until you are
about 130 yards away, it's tucked round the corner on the right, so
another accurate shot up the fairway is required to leave a pitch into the
green.
There is water all on the left and back of the green so you still can't be lazy
with your approach. There are many good holes at Dartmouth but this one made
me think about how to play it the most, I must have tried three different strategies
on the three days but still only managed 7,6,7.

Fantastic golf course. A real test & a monster to walk around. Great accommodation with all the facilities. Great short breaks well worth the trip from anywhere in the UK. Signature or favourite hole? Sorry to many to recommend a single hole. The par 3 3rd, wonderful elevated tee over a pond, the par 5 4th just awesome, one of the best holes in golf anywhere, the par 4 10th great hole ( I have seen people play of the rock face, very amusing!!!) never played of the medal tee though which is situated next to the club house, now that's a frightening drive!!!!, the par 3 18th of an elevated tee over 200yds over a lake is just amazing. Great to sit outside the club house and watch players playing the 18th. Good little par 3 course as well. Hire a buggy for the day and play both you will not be disappointed. Get a group of mates in a car and go for 3 days, well worth it. We go every year for a break, used to travel down from Surrey it took 3 hours door to clubhouse, now I live in Dorset it only takes an hour. Shame.

After 7 holes on a typical English Windy day with a force 5 gale blowing all around the shop,I had 2 stableford points after 7 holes here and wanted to die. However I started to play a bit to the top of my game and simply cannot wait to play this links gem that is simply the most evil toughest course I have ever played. Not for the faint hearted vbut an absolute pleasure. Pure enjoyable evil!

Golf should be fun. This is the new style course-a bit like sticking pins in yourself-how hard are you? Can you handle it?. Does a course have to be 7500 yards long to be a test? I have played a hundred more enjoyable courses and won't rush back to Dartmouth in a hurry. Oh-by the way the hotel is quite nice and the food is quite good!
