Course Review

Denham was a joy to play, the staff were very helpful & the course condition was superb. Fairways, tees & greens were all brilliant and the setting was great, you would never have guessed you were playing just a few miles from Heathrow with two major motorways right next door.

The course starts fairly easily where a good drive could see your ball rolling down the slope to leave just a chip on to the green. The 2nd is a different story, there is a gorge in the middle of the hole that could well be reached by a good drive, if you end up in this gorge then it is a blind shot to the green.

2nd fairway
The large impression in the middle of the 2nd fairway.

The 3rd is a straight forward par 4 with just the airfield to worry about from the tee. Then comes the tricky 4th & a testing par 3 5th that requires a well struck tee shot. The 6th feels longer than it's yardage suggests with it's slightly uphill approach and the 7th has six bunkers littering the fairway just waiting for a stray ball.

The 8th green slopes from left to right so you really need to aim for the left side of the green and let your ball make it's way back to the centre. The 9th is a very tough long par 4 that will require two good shots to reach but it is followed by the 10th which rewards a good drive with a steep slope from 100 yards out down to the green. The 11th has you deciding whether or not to lay up down the fairway and then pitch on to the green or go for the big drive down the slope.

Approach to 11th
The downhill approach to the 11th green.

The 12th has quite a tight shot into a long thin green that has no safe side to miss, with bunkers & slope on the left and slope on the right. The next two par 5's give you a chance for a good score, the only real danger is the bunkers that surround the green on 13 and the bunkers in range from the tee on 14. The 15th is pretty straight forward too with a stepped green protected once again by the steep faced bunkers that seem to be quite common here.

Bunker
Stay out of Denham's steep faced bunkers .

The 16th is a nice short par 3 with a reasonable sized target to hit, good birdie opportunity here, then comes the 17th. The view from the tee makes the hole seem quite tight but there is plenty of fairway that you just cannot see from the tee, just play down the right and you will have a short-mid iron uphill approach to the green.

17th tee
View from the 17th tee.

The final hole is a tough par 4 where a good drive is needed to get you close enough for your approach shot, once again it's a must to stay out of those bunkers.

The barn style clubhouse looks great from outside & in with good facilities, overall we enjoyed our day at Denham and think it is a hidden gem.

Favourite Hole

Hole 4: 419 yard Par 4.

Approach to 4th
Approach to the 4th, those bunkers look menacing but are a good 70 yards short of the green.

There are a few holes that could have made it as our favourite but this one just came out in front. The drive from the tee does not look tight but stray too far left and you will run out of fairway, too far right and you will either end up in the bunkers or not have a line in to the green. The approach is downhill so the distance is hard to judge and with a back to front sloping green it is important to get as close as possible to the flag for an easier putt.
