This has got to be some of the best value golf you will find in London. It's not Wentworth, but at £4.80 for 9 holes midweek, it was never going to be! Owned by Ealing Council, Horsenden Hill can be best described as short but challenging. Consisting of 8 par 3s and a solitary par 4, the course, as the name suggests, is sat on a wooded hilltop offering views over North London from Heathrow to Canary Wharf. When I played in mid September, the course was in pretty good condition. While some of the tees were a little bare, the fairways were in good nick and the greens way better than I had expected. The bunkers actually consisted of soft sand, unlike the brown concrete I have encountered at some pay-and-play courses recently. The majority of the fairways are sloping, often in two directions at once, and have a hard, almost links quality to them. This is a bonus for beginners, as a topped tee shot will still roll a satisfying distance. For the lower handicappers, the position of the greens relative to the surrounding trees means that if you are going to attack the pin from the tee, you better make it stick. As for course facilities, there are changing rooms in the clubhouse, although I'm not sure about showers.

The highlight for me was the 102-yd 2nd hole, which slopes all the way down from the tee to a tiny green surrounded by thick rough and trees, and is certainly a test of nerve. If you want a lush course with the full country club atmosphere, then there are plenty of places round London that will happily take large amounts of your cash from you for the privilege. However, if you want to play a fun parkland course that actually has character, provides stunning views and will give you change from a fiver, then you've got to give Horsenden Hill a go. What have you got to lose?

I played the course on sunday started a bit late so I couldn't finish as it was too dark, £7.50 for the nine hole but was well worth it. The car park closes at 5 on a sunday so you must park in the public road, if you want a good game with some nice views of the city this is for you, there is a nice little bar next to the 1st tee, I would recommend this for all golfers but would probably be better for beginners well worth the money I paid and I will be going back to finish it off.

Recently returned to playing and use this course quite alot. Lovely views and some interesting holes. Very busy at weekends, but quiet during the week. Played there last Thursday (2nd November) 8am no one else there until I reached the 4th tee. Ideal for a beginner or if you just fancy a quick game. All greens in good condition. Currently all tees are off mats.
