Course Review
The course has a history dating
back to 1872 (then Newbury and District) but has been rebuilt and amalgamated
in 1946 with Crookham Golf Club.
When looking at the yardages on the scorecard
you get the impression that, apart from the couple of long par 4's, this
course is going to be quite easy. Well you would be wrong, the course is
very mature and has some well placed features to hinder your scoring.
There are three bunkers on the 1st tee that will
catch the miss hit first drive of the day, the tee shot on the 2nd needs
thinking about what club to use as you could carry through the fairway
if take too much club.
The course is definitely not a flat course either which makes club choices for
the approach to some greens difficult.
The 3rd being a fine example, nearly 160 yards but reachable
with a 9 iron.
Bunkers on the course are well placed too, the 6th and 12th holes being fine
examples.
Positioned on the left of the 6th making this a must hit the green hole and on
the fairway of the short 12th making you think about laying up with an iron.
The tees and fairways of the course were in great condition
and the greens were a pleasure to putt on. We were made very welcome by the staff
and members we met and had a very enjoyable days golf.
Favourite Hole
Hole
8: Long par 4, hard to reach in two.
Good testing par 4 this one, the ditch at the
turn in the fairway is reachable for the long hitters so you want a long
drive on this hole but not too long.
You really need to be down the right of the fairway otherwise you will not be
able to see the green for your approach shot.
The approach to the green is all uphill, so to par this hole you really
need two good shots or three for the approach and one putt.

This course is a fair test of golf and you need to be accurate of the tees to score well. I played the course at the end of August 2005 and it was in very good condition. The staff in the pro shop were friendly and helpful. Some tight holes force careful shot selection such as the second and eigth and place a premium on sensible course management. I thoroughly recommend this course and look forward to returning.
