Course Review

We have yet to play the Wellington but some of it's holes are ones from the original course, the review below is a review of that original 18.

You get a great chance to start with a par or birdie as the only danger on the 1st is the rough on the left, keep clear of that and you could reach the green in 2.

The next few holes are quite open with bail out areas for the wayward golfer. The 5th will test your nerve as there is water left & front of the green, depending where the pin is it could be a scary tee shot.

The 10th looks easy on the card 350 yard par 4 dead straight, but it's very narrow, miss the fairway on either side and you are in trees.

At the moment you can be quite wayward on most of the holes and still recover, but as the course matures and the small trees grow this will cease to be the case. The Wellington course has a great par 5 on it & some testing right angle doglegs. Water affects quite a few holes and the fairway's were in great condition.

We did have one criticism, the greens, now they were fine to putt on and the ball did run well but they were very firm, which meant that a lot of your approaches had to be pitched just short of the green to roll on and stop. If you went straight for the flags the ball would hit the green and bounce straight through.

The clubhouse is great, the staff were very friendly and the showers were superb.

Favourite Hole

Hole 7(Wellington):   501 yard par 5.
The hole bends slightly to the right but trees all the way down the right hand side of this hole will try to stop you cutting the corner. Get a good drive away and the downhill sloping fairway could give you a good chance of trying for the green in 2.
But beware the lake in front and left of the green is there to catch those attempts at the green from a far. Even if you choose to play it safe you have to be careful, one chap in the group behind us decided to lay up while we were on the green. He pitched his ball 50 yards short of the lake and it bounded on down the hill until it disappeared into the water.

Absolutely cracking course! Challenging for both high and low handicaps. Course offers some great views and challenging holes. Nicely surrounded by tall trees to just finish the course off. 10 out of 10.

A cracking course, but we played the day after a massive downpour and the course doesn't drain that well as it's clay soil !
However, the greens were in fantastic condition and the course provides a good test to all level of golfers.

Best hole: 13th
Long downhill 492 yrd par 5. Tree lined down the first 200yrds or so on the right, with a lake in front of the green. Go for it or play down the right ! The decision is yours !

My first thoughts on the course was how quiet it is. A perfect putting green gets you in the mood ready to start your round.

The first hole is a easy opening and gets you into the grove. The course is quite young and will be quite a difficult course once the trees mature. The fairways are a little mossy at the moment and the rough/fairway borders are not defined as expected. The greens are almost perfect. Very smooth, little firm. But the ball runs very true, with lots of subtle breaks on them. The course has a lot of right to left dog leg holes which give you the option to lay up or go over the trees if you hit the ball high enough, so the course is good for all levels of player.

Would I join this club........in a word Yes.. The green fees for the year are good...Shame about the Membership fee.

Its a superb course for all handicaps. The greens are improving by the day an excellent all round the year course. The new course opens in August, have driven the new course its going to be superb.
The staff are friendly and helpful. If you want to join and I am sure you will tell Timo Derek sent you!!!!

This new course has settled in very nicely. The current 18 holes offer numerous good tests of both club choice and nerve when playing over and round water! A second 18 holes are due to open in August 2003. Superb facilities and friendly staff.
£10 weekdays before 07:30, £15 weekdays after 07:30 - good value!

I have just played the full 36 holes, the course and facilities are excellent. The Wellington Course is a good test of your ability and skill as opposed to the Waterloo Course which is shorter. My only reservation would be taking a Junior to play at the weekend as they have to pay the full adult price.

Sherfield Oaks is a very nice course, played there 31/7/03. As of 1 August 03 there are now 36 holes, both quite different, we played on a mixture of both so has everyone else up to now. With doglegs, water, well placed bunkers (some hidden from view which was a real pain) and some wonderful greens (big, small, wide and long) its going to be a course many will return to, just to prove they can go around lower than the first time they played. One gripe though, no yardage markers on the fairways.

I think the course is great I'm a 20 handicap and the course sorts any handicap the hardest hole I think is the 6th with the trees on the left and on the right the easiest hole is probably the 5th the short par 3.

Great courses and excellent value for money. I'm a high handicapper and the courses have helped me improve my game. The first hole is not too daunting and eases you in gently and a chance for a good score gives you great confidence for some of the trickier holes later on in the round. The facilities in the club house are superb, the staff are very friendly and willing to help, and the pro shop is well stocked. Keep up the good work Sherfield!!!

Both courses now in excellent condition and maturing nicely. The longer course (Wellington) has 4 par 5s and some daunting rough (only criticism was the slow pace of play caused by constant ball searching in the long grass). The slightly shorter Waterloo course has some interesting challenges - particularly the lake guarding the par 3 5th and the stream immediately in front of the par 4 9th. Greens are hard, quick and true. Very friendly staff and an interesting 36 holes.

Played the wellington for the first time recently, really well kept course and have now decided to take lessons at the club also, fantasic all round.

I have been a member of sherfield Oaks for nearly 3 years. I have to say the course is draining very well, the greens have been very well maintained. I have a gripe with visitors, PEASE REPAIR PITCH MARKS! The pro is extremely helpful, and the grass driving range is as good as any I have seen. The club has 2 courses, The Waterloo and The Wellington, both are very good and very different. Waterloo is the shorter of the 2, with lakes and bunkers being the main hazards, you have to be accurate with all shots to the green due to the small USGA standard greens. The Wellington is longer, and in my opinion more challenging due to the sloping lies and the wind playing a factor on most holes. under club at your peril! To finish it off I would say this course is as good as any I have played locally in this area, and with some fantastic wild life makes a very relaxing day out.

I played the waterloo course last sunday being 22.01.2006 and I must say I was a little upset. It was my 1st time on the course really looking forward to it with my friends and it must of been the only day of the year so far when the thick fog came down. We went off anyway around half 7 thinking it would clear as we could not see past 100 yards, but in our case this did not happen. I did not get a chance to see the course or even an entire hole so the 31 pounds spent should of been relaxed in some way. But I will endeavour to get back the soon.

What a charming course. I played the waterloo and must admit that it is a lovely course. Rather short but tight, so challenging off the tee. Unfortunately, I played just after a lot of rain and most of the back nine was drenched, a messy affair. My only real gripe was the pin positions. I found that at least 13/14 of the 18 pins were 6/7 ft from the edge which made it pretty tough. A good course on the whole and will gladly go back again.

I have played the Wellington and the Waterloo on many occasions as a platinum member of crown golf and a full member of Oak Park. I find both courses easy to play and I play off 18, having said that this is in no way a slur on the club as it is sometimes nice to find a golf course that encourages you to play the confidence shots. Both courses drain extremely well and even in the winter the greens are playable and relatively consistent, there are a handful of holes that will punish you with a wayward tee shot but in general the holes are very generous off the tee.
The club house is certainly one of the best in the area and I would suggest a visit for the mid handicapper to try and break the elusive 10 over which is definitely a possibility on either course.

It's a nice course.

I have played these courses many times, and in my opinion they are both excellent courses. While playing this course over the last couple of years my ability has ranged from that of a 28 handicap to a 13 handicap and I can say that this is a perfect course for anyone in that bracket. My advice on this course would be, don’t think you can stop a ball like Tiger! These greens are very true, so if you hit a “distance” ball in to one of these greens they will bounce and run, after all that is what those balls a designed to do. There is plenty of opportunity on both courses to get up a down with a reasonable score.
The club house is excellent, and the staff are always happy to help. It has a very relaxed atmosphere that you will tend not to find in the more “established” club. That’s a good thing. This is definitely the best 2 courses in the area.

Well well well

What an absolute scorcher. This is the best course since sliced bread came about. Tricky first nine on the wellington course. Will gladly return to play the waterloo. Fantastic club house. I play at plus one and I struggled a little thank you so much to the people at Sherfield Oaks.

What a fantastic course, it has a great selection of chocolate bars in the pro shop and the drinks are immaculate. The pro should not be replaced as he is the best in the country. The course is in great condition and the putting surfaces are great on every hole I played both courses lately and I preferred the waterloo as it is tighter and less forgiving.

Having played at sherfield for the last two years not as a member, the staff are very helpful and the course is very well maintained.if only i could improve my golf I would probably think to sign up for membership. Well done sherfield staff. regards stephen.

I am currently playing a 30 handicap. I really enjoyed both courses and if I lived locally I would definately join. Both courses have their unique challenges. I actually prefer the Waterloo course as it's easier to concentrate, where as the openess of the Wellington course will lead you into a false sense of security, and steal strokes off your score before you know what happened. Both courses have been added to the Sky Caddie.
