Clubhouse
The 16th hole requires a brave tee shot to get close to the flag.

Sutton Green is a nice looking course situated between Guildford and Woking, the gently undulating fairways carve their way through the wooded landscape providing some spectacular views of Surrey countryside. The first hole is a par 5 offering a good chance of a birdie start as long as you don't go left onto the road that approaches the clubhouse. Tee off over the lake on the second, making sure to keep it right of the trees to provide a good line into the green, then comes the first of the par 3's with quite a deep green so make a note of the pin position.

2nd hole
Teeing off over the water on the 2nd hole.

The fourth hole is a complete right angle dogleg, the sensible option is to play to the corner to leave a short iron approach after which comes the shortest hole on the course that really is just a pitch and a putt. A good drive down the left side of the sixth can see your ball nearly reach the green in one, while the following par 5 requires three solid shots to reach the safety of the putting surface with out of bounds along the right and bunkers down the left. You turn and play in the opposite direction for the eighth then back again for the ninth which has a lake along the left all the way to the green.

4th hole
The right angled dogleg of the 4th hole.

The tenth goes back the other way with the lake not really coming into play from the tee, two solid shots could see you on the green with a putt for an eagle but try to get on the same tier as the flag. The par 3 that follows is the longest on the course, at over 200 yards this can be tricky especially if against the wind. The short twelfth just needs an iron off the tee to leave a short iron approach and make sure you take enough club for the par 3 that follows as water and a bunker are the hazards just in front of the thirteenth green.

7th hole
Approach through the gap in the trees to the 7th green.

The best line on the fourteenth is just right of the bunker leaving an approach that does not have to go over the water, if the wind is against you on the next hole you may have to play it like a par 5 especially if the flag is at the back of the 41 yard long green. The final par 3 is a test of nerves, do you take on the flag and risk going into the water or aim over to the right for a bail out area. The penultimate hole is best approached from the left while the last can be reached in two but mind the water to the right.

14th hole
Looking back down the 14th hole.

The facilities were good from the clubhouse bar to the changing rooms and practice putting green. We were told that the membership is restricted to avoid overcrowding and it certainly looks to have paid off as the course looked in good condition even after the lack of rain.

Favourite Hole

Hole 9:
Quite a short par 4 but the water makes it a tough one.

9th hole
The 9th hole with water all along the right up to the green.

With the water all down the right hand side of the hole you are going to think twice about your tee shot and your approach, they are in the process of modifying the hole at the moment, extending the water closer to the green to make the approach even tougher.
