Course Review
Superb looking course set in
an undulating tree lined area just outside Rotherwick. The fairways and
tees were in great condition and the greens, well you certainly can't
say that they are a bit flat. Humps, bumps, slopes and tiers on nearly
all of them.
All the holes apart from 10,11 & 12 are played through tree lined fairways
where a misplaced drive will cost you dearly. And the rough at about 2" deep
doesn't look a bad place to be, but it is the type of rough where your ball sits
right down making it almost impossible to see, even when standing right next
to it.
We had a great day here and recommend this course to anyone who wants a challenge
and likes to enjoy the scenery while playing but be warned the course record
of only -3 tells you that this is no easy course.
Favourite Hole
Hole
9: 435 yard par 4.
A cracking hole this feels great if you par it and looks great while playing
it. There were quite a few good looking holes on this course but we chose this
one. A good drive will put you in a chance of a getting on the green with your
second shot otherwise you may be laying up short of the ditch.
The approach shot plays shorter than it looks but even when on the green (with
what we can only describe as a humpback whale feature on it) the pin position
will determine if you are putting for a birdie or just trying to get close to
the hole.

A stunning course in my view and a real challenge for the average amateur due
to its narrow, tree lined fairways. Highlights include the long par 3 6th, the
9th, where you drive blind over a hill and are faced with a heart-in-your-mouth
second shot down the hill to a shallow green protected by a ditch and a large
tree, and the par 5 16th where depending on where you hit your tee-shot will
determine whether you are walking off with a birdie or a bogie.

I've played this course a few times on corporate days. The first 7 holes
are non-descript and have obviously been added on at a later date. The 1st
and 7th holes cross fairways and there a couple of short easy par 4's.
In complete contrast, the remaining 11 holes, which I guess constituted
the original course, are delightful. The 9th is indeed a cracking hole
but my particular favourite is the 15th, a 400yd downhill par 4 with
a very attractively designed green requiring an accurate second to avoid
the trees and other hazards protecting the green.

I have played this course a few times both before and after the recent renovations. The new layout is superb - it re-opened in 2005 -lots of new fairways and large flowing greens. The new Rotherwick Course at Tylney Park is set in 200 acres of parkland and listed by English Heritage as a protected park and garden. At 6608 yds off the white tees it is challenge for regular golfers. At 7017 yds off the black it is a real course for good players. It has adequate practice facilities and I noticed that carts were for hire. Great track.
