Course Review

A great 'Sea Turf' course where you have to be accurate from the tee or you are going to lose balls. The 1st shares a wide fairway with the 18th & is a short par 4 so makes you think this course is going to be quite easy. This soon changes on the 2nd with a tight tee shot on to a left to right fairway. The 3rd is a tricky par 3 where the green is sunk below the tee, the slope in front of the green throws anything short through the green so you need to get the correct distance.

2nd hole
Tight tee shot on the 2nd hole .

The 4th needs a solid tee shot over the gorse bushes with trouble all down the right but has a bail out area which is the 9th fairway. The 5th is a pretty standard par 3 with not much trouble followed by a short par 4 which really needs an iron off the tee, anything right off the tee or on the approach is going to be a lost ball.

4th hole
View of all that gorse from the 4th tee.

The 7th is one of those 'Shall I go for it' holes, either drive to the start of the fairway to leave a plus 150 yard approach or see how much you can cut off by aiming over the water. The 8th can be deceptive with the wind behind you coming off the sea so choose your club wisely and the 9th has a lovely view from the tee over the heather, it's a long par 4 so depending on the wind direction you may reach the green in three.

7th hole
The tide was out when we played the 7th.

The 10th is another long par 4 that needs a good drive off the tee but the next hole makes up for it with a short par 5, keep it straight and you might just get a birdie. The 12th poses a bit more of a threat with gorse & heather down the right and a pond on the left, the ditches down the left are covered so have no penalty if you roll into them. Playing directly into the wind coming off the sea makes the 13th hole a hard one to judge for distance, if it's not a clam day add a club or two to the one you would normally use for the distance. The 14th could be reached from the tee but with all the trouble around you would be advised to hit an iron off the tee to the 150 yard marker.

15th hole
The Red Arrows were on display while we played the 15th.

The 15th has a tricky tee shot because of the angle position of the tee area but it is a sub 300 yard par 4 so distance is not important with your first shot. The 16th looks simple but again being next to the sea depends on the wind direction and the same goes for the tee shot on the 17th, the mound in the middle of the 17th fairway also distorts your view of the approach to the green, check your yardage it's probably farther than you think. The 18th is played to the wide shared fairway but the approach has to be an accurate on with the road & railway wall on either side of the green.

18th hole
The approach to the sunken 18th green.

The greens on this course were superb with putts that seemed to roll smoothly on forever, the rolling, undulating fairways were also great. They looked untouched by man, with a nice spongy 'Sea Turf' feel, apart from the 7th which was completely flat and looked out of place. The few members we met were very friendly and so were the staff in the clubhouse. We highly recommend you play this course if you visit this part of the coast.

Favourite Hole

Hole 18:
399 yard par 4 with out of bounds all down the right..

18th hole
View from the tee on the 18th.

With so many great looking holes it was hard to pick a favourite one but the approach on this hole just shaded it. The drive off the tee is not too demanding as the fairway is very wide but you are better off on the left hand side giving you a good view of the green. Your next shot needs to be an accurate one as the green is surrounded by trouble, you could find yourself watching as your ball ricochets off the wall next to the railway or bounces on the road that runs in front.

Not a 'classic' links in the true sense but great value, fun and friendly with lovely views along the estuary of the boats and Exmouth. Nice simple links style layout with some very good par 3's and really excellent greens, probably as good as many more famous counterparts. All the traits of a links, deep bunkers, nice flat walking and a steady breeze. Try it, you might just like it.
