Course Review

We only played the East course as we were never going to review all three courses in one visit so we will have to go back for a review of the West & Edinburgh courses.

The first thing we noticed were the staff at Wentworth, 'Can I help you Gentleman', 'Sir', 'Mr Wilton', all these phrases and more were spoken by the staff who made us feel very welcome and were very helpful.

The practice facilities too were second to none, we have not played any other course where balls are supplied on the practice green for you to practice before your round, as you walk to the first tee, by the starters hut is a table with scorecards, ball markers, pitch mark repairers and a pin position for the day card, superb.

5th holeThe East course opens with a very generous wide fairway so you get a chance to get off to a good start. The approach is uphill so club choice is important. The 2nd has a grand view from one of the many elevated tees but requires a solid drive as it is one of six plus 400 yard par 4's. The 3rd is the first easy chance for a birdie, as long as you are sensible with your tee shot you will be left with a short iron to the green. The 4th is the first of the par 3's, all of which are well protected, then it is on to the 5th where pin position and accurate approach to the green is the key as a putt across this green is a nightmare. The 6th provided Rick with his first birdie of the day and is a relatively short par 4 with a severely left to right sloping green.

Back down the 11thThe par 3 7th will find most landing short of the green and hoping to roll on to the putting surface, followed by the tough 8th were two long shots are required to reach the green in regulation. The back nine is polished off with the only par 5 on the course which should provide you with a birdie putt.

Another tricky par 3 is followed by the East's signature hole. The shape of the hole tends to make you aim down the right or try for a left to right tee shot flirting with the trees, but the sloping fairway will feed most balls hit down the left back to the centre of the fairway. A long approach is then needed to a two tier green so careful study of that pin position card is required.
12th hole
The 12th had a very nasty pin position when we played it, the pin was tucked away to the right in between two bunkers which left about a 10 yard landing area. The 13th plays a little longer than it looks because of the uphill approach, then comes the short 14th & 15th par 4's.

The 16th is a superb par 4 with bunkers in the fairway just where you want to drive to and a bunker just short of the green where your long approach is bound to land before running on to the green. The downhill 17th is a tricky yardage to judge but a tee shot landing short should make it to the green. Then comes the last, a drive over the road staying well clear of the lake leaves a tricky approach over the five bunkers that are just waiting to grab anything short of the front to back sloping green.

The tees and fairways were great and the greens reminded us of putting on a snooker table. Some of the views around the course were breathtaking and as stated earlier the staff were superb, a very enjoyable day indeed.

Favourite Hole

Hole 18:
The 11th may be the signature hole but we thought this 437 yard par 4 just edged it.
18th hole
You need to drive over the road to have any chance of reaching the green in two, the lake does not really come in to play but you are aware of it. The approach is the key to this hole, all you can see from the fairway is this line of bunkers cutting the fairway in half that look as though they are right on the front of the green. You need to clear those bunkers but you do not want to go long or left of the green, accuracy is definitely the key here.

I have been fortunate over the years to play all the courses at Wentworth. Even more fortunate that I have never had to pay the astronomical green fee costs, but that's another story.

Wonderful course, wonderful setting, golf at its very best as you would expect.

Strange, but most of us who have had the good fortune to play Wentworth often, actually prefer the East to the West. Do not be lulled into thinking the East is in anyway sub-par to its illustrious brother, this is a top notch golf course in its own right, enjoy.
