Course Review

1st holeExcellent course and facilities.
The course can be testing for golfers who like to take a chance but will be fair to you if you are careful.
The greens, fairways and tees are all in great condition and we must mention the size of the greens, they are huge, which means they are slightly easier to hit but can also leave massive putts.

The course is littered with ditches and there is a good quantity of water around too, making club selection vital. Our only gripe with this course is that they say they accept the 2 fore 1 (GreenFree) vouchers, well they do, but they charge you for a days golf when they take the voucher instead of the 18 hole green fee, so we made a massive saving of £2.50 each when we used the vouchers to play here, hardly worth it really.

Favourite Hole

Hole 9: 498 yard par 5.
A tremendous hole with danger everywhere, either lay up short of the lake or carry it in excess of 200 yards, the decision is yours.

I saw this course being constructed, again from some redundant farmers fields, but oh what a contrast to the likes of Test Valley for example (see review). Loads of earth movement undertaken to create moguls and definition to the course. Suffered badly from drainage problems in the low lying areas of the course initially, that meant that the course in all reality was just about impossible to play throughout the winter months.

The course, as it has aged, has improved beyond recognition and a great deal of work has gone in to improve the whole course and it shows.

Really well constructed holes throughout make this one very tough course to make a good score on, no matter what your standard. There are some seriously tough holes on this course and many of the ditches in the lower fields are slap bang in the driving zone. If you are a high handicapper you will needs a large supply of balls to get round, u have been warned. This is a great course to improve one area of your game that all of us need if we are to improve and that is Course Management, without it this course will chew you up and spit you out.

The par 4 Si3 first hole is a card buster from the start. This has got to be one of the hardest opening holes in golf anywhere. A 5 on this is a very, very good score. Once passed this hole the course opens out and good scores can be had for a few holes at least. The very short par 4 8th is very deceptive and hard to score well on, if the flag is behind the bunker, beware the green is domed and very very hard to get anywhere near the pin, I have seen some monster scores on this very innocent looking hole. The 9th hole has a very tough drive just to get going. Off the back tee's the drive through the tree gap over the pond to the fairway is nearly a 230 yd drive. The pond level is clearly rising as the number of balls within it continue to grow at a rapid rate of knots.

The short par 4 16th is again very deceptive. I have seen this driven often, often coming to grief, the ditch across the fairway can be hit with anything more than a 9 iron in summer, so again course management is the key to a score here. You pays your money, you takes your chances.

Magnificent club house looks out over the course & in summer it is very pleasant indeed to sit outside relaxing after playing the mammoth uphill 18th. You know you have played a proper course when you eventually sit down to rest!!!! If you card over 30 points you have done well.
